四、Reading Comprehension

As we know, English family names are passed down from one generation to the next. However, they were not widely used until after the Norman Conquest of 1066. Prior to that time, most people thought it unnecessary to use family names. Instead, they preferred a single name.

As the countrys population increased, however, people began to make use of such descriptions as John, the Bakeror Thomas, son of Richardto tell the difference between men or women of the same name. Finally, such descriptive names became connected with a family, inherited or passed down, from one generation to the next. This is the origin of many current surnames.

But do you know how English people got their family names? Some family names come from the places of their homes. For example, a man living on or near a hill, his family name may become Hill. Some family names come from a persons job. If a person was a cook, his family name may become Cook. Besides, many people got their family names from their fathers names. For example, the name Jacksonmay refer to the son of Jack.

Why shopping online can be good for your pocket and your health

How do you buy your food? Perhaps you do your shopping in brick-and-mortar stores, preferring to be able to see and touch the things you buy.  If so, consider this: switching to an online shop could save your time, money and calories.

As a student, Sara Mills switched to online shopping three months ago and she feels sure that she made the right choice. Sara says, Since I started shopping online, Ive saved so much money! In the European Middle Ages, breakfast was not usually thought to be necessary and important. In earlier periods, it didnt even exist. Only two formal meals were had by people every dayone at mid-day and one in the evening. The two-meal system remained consistent throughout the Middle Ages.

In some times and places, men were often ashamed to eat breakfast. Breakfast was only provided to children, the elderly, the sick and working men. Anyone else didnt speak of having breakfast, let alone eating in the morning, because eating breakfast meant that one was poor, such as a low-status farmer or working man. A hamburger is a kind of sandwich made of some meat inside a bread bun. Lettuce, tomatoes, onions and cheese are often put inside a hamburger, too. People also like to add mustard, ketchup and mayonnaise to make hamburgers more delicious.

The word hamburgercomes from Hamburg, which is the second largest city in Germany. No one knows for sure how hamburgers got their name. Some people say it is because the first hamburgers were made in Hamburg. Other people say it is because some people from Hamburg loved to eat hamburgers when they were in the US.

Today, hamburgers are one of the worlds most popular foods. They are served in fast-food restaurants all over the world. The most famous hamburger is the Big Mac, which is served at McDonalds. Every year around 550 million Big Macs are sold in the US.

The importance of a childs early years

The importance of careful nurture during a childs early years has long been believed by health professionals. However, recent research has found even more proof to back this belief.

Science writer Emil Barker has interviewed some expert science writers and researchers in a bid to find out more about how a babys neurons (神经细胞) get wired to other neurons and how these connections grow at an incredible pace during the first few years of a childs life.

Mr. Barker says, A baby is born with 100 billion neurons. As a child develops and grows, connections are made between these neurons. By the age of three, a child will have made something like 1,000 trillion neural connections within his / her brain. These connections are crucial, because they control everything the child doeseverything from walking to speaking to playing. These neural connections are the ones which a child will use and rely on throughout life.

So what can we learn from this research? For Mr. Barker, its simple. He says, The biggest and most important thing we can learn from this research is that the more attention and nurturing a child receives at home, the greater their IQ will tend to be. The input provided by parents and caregivers is so important in strengthening neural connections during these early years of development.
